The City of Markham commits itself to the ongoing work necessary to create a healthy workplace and community for staff, residents, and visitors. The City stands against all forms of racism, stereotyping, prejudice, and discrimination, including, but not limited to, anti-Black, anti-Asian, and anti-Indigenous racism, Islamophobia, and anti-Semitism. We also stand against discrimination based on gender identity and expression, age, sexual orientation, religious affiliation and ability, and all other grounds referenced in the Human Rights Code.
The City of Markham's definition of diversity is broad. Diversity encompasses the vast range of similarities and differences among individuals, which includes but is not limited to ethnicity, race, culture, Indigenous origin, country of origin, nationality, age, gender, gender identity, gender expression, sexual orientation, belief system, religion, marital status, parental status, socio-economic difference, appearance, language and accent, disability/ability, mental health, education, work experience, neurodiversity, thinking style, personality style, geographic location and so on.
The City of Markham stands against all forms of racism. The City of Markham acknowledges that racism exists in Canada and within the borders of the City of Markham in many shapes and forms and that racism is a violation of human rights.
Despite human rights legislation and other legal measures to protect the rights of racialized people, racism exists and we all have a role to play in disrupting and dismantling racism in all of its forms.
Through various efforts the City of Markham works toward addressing systemic barriers, social inequities and creating a community where people feel a sense of belonging.
In March 2021, the City of Markham Mayor, Frank Scarpitti, made a statement addressing anti-Asian racism. The disturbing criminal acts against members of the Asian community reflect the need to combat racism in all its forms to ensure the safety of individuals and communities and to build a community that reflects rich culture and a sense of belonging.

In July 2020, the City launched its strategy to combat anti-Black racism. The strategy includes a number of specific actions. In 2021, the City of Markham updated its strategy to Combat Anti-Black Racism and shares a video message from the Special Advisor on anti-Black racism on anti-Black racism and making significant change.
In addition, the City is offering its Let’s Talk about Racism eLearning to the public to raise awareness about the issue of racism and specifically anti-Black racism. This is the same education that Markham Council and City staff have received.
